Bald Head Care: A Simple Daily Routine for a Shaved Scalp

A shaved head needs less care than most people expect, but it needs it consistently. Two habits do most of the work: putting moisture back after you shave, and protecting a scalp that now gets direct sun. Everything else is fine-tuning for your skin type.

The routine at a glance

  • Every morning: moisturize, then broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher on your scalp (or a moisturizer with SPF 30).
  • Shave days: prep, shave, rinse, pat dry, then moisturize while the skin is still slightly damp.
  • Evenings: wash off sweat and sunscreen with a gentle cleanser.
  • Now and then: exfoliate gently, never on cut or sunburned skin.
  • Every few months: check your scalp for new or changing spots.

When Step Why it matters What to look for
Morning Moisturize, then sunscreen A bare scalp is exposed skin. The AAD advises sunscreen on all exposed skin, including your scalp. Broad-spectrum, SPF 30+, water-resistant. Lightweight or matte if your scalp gets shiny.
Shave days Shave, rinse, pat dry, moisturize Shaving and washing dry the skin out. The AAD recommends moisturizing right after shaving, while skin is damp. Pre-shave oil or gel before; an after-shave lotion or moisturizer after.
Midday outdoors Reapply sunscreen or wear a hat The AAD advises reapplying every two hours and after sweating. A stick or spray is easier to reapply on the go. A wide-brimmed hat covers more than a cap.
Evening Wash with a gentle cleanser Removes sunscreen, sweat and oil from the day. Gentle, non-stripping. Moisturize after if your scalp feels tight.

Sun protection: the step that matters most

When hair stops covering your scalp, it takes the full force of the sun. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that balding or thinning hair increases your risk of sunburn on the scalp, and recommends sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum protection and water resistance, reapplied every two hours and after sweating or any time your head gets wet.

The Skin Cancer Foundation says squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer to appear on the scalp. It also points out that a baseball cap covers only about a quarter of your head, so for long days outside a wide-brimmed hat with UPF protection does more.

The easiest way to make sunscreen a habit is to combine it with moisturizing. Our Daily SPF30 Scalp Moisturizer does both in one step; any broad-spectrum SPF 30+ product you'll actually use every day works too.

On shave days

  1. Prep. Shave after a warm shower. Use a few drops of pre-shave oil for a dry shave or a thin layer of shave gel for a wet one.
  2. Shave. Light pressure and the direction of growth where your skin is sensitive.
  3. Rinse and pat dry. Pat rather than rub.
  4. Moisturize while damp. The AAD's skin care tips for men recommend applying moisturizer immediately after shaving, while the skin is still damp. An after-shave lotion with soothing ingredients or a plain moisturizer both work.

If you get bumps a day or two after shaving, a wet shave with shave gel and lighter pressure usually helps.

Exfoliating a bald head

Exfoliating removes dead skin and can help a shave go more smoothly, but more isn't better. The AAD's advice on exfoliating at home is that the more aggressive the method, the less often you should do it, and that you should never exfoliate skin that is cut, broken or sunburned. Moisturize straight afterwards.

In practice: start gently and infrequently, avoid exfoliating right before or after a shave, and back off if your scalp gets red or sore.

Dry scalp or shiny scalp?

If your scalp feels dry or tight

Moisturize after every shave and after showering, while the skin is still damp. A richer, fragrance-light moisturizer at night can help. If your scalp keeps flaking, itching or scaling despite moisturizing, the cause may be a skin condition rather than dryness: the AAD lists seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis and actinic keratoses among the possibilities. That's a reason to see a dermatologist.

If your scalp gets shiny

Shine is oil. According to Cleveland Clinic, your face and scalp have more oil-producing sebaceous glands than anywhere else on the body. The AAD's guidance for oily skin is written for the face, but the same principles translate: wash up to twice a day with a gentle cleanser, choose oil-free products, and blot shine during the day. A lightweight or matte-finish sunscreen keeps you protected without adding gloss.

Check your scalp every few months

A shaved head is one of the easier places to keep an eye on, as long as you look. Use a hand mirror in front of the bathroom mirror, or ask someone to check the back for you. The AAD's skin self-exam guide advises seeing a board-certified dermatologist if you notice a spot that looks different from the others, or that changes, itches or bleeds.

Building your kit

You need four things: something for shave prep, something soothing for after, a daily moisturizer and broad-spectrum SPF 30+. They don't have to come from one brand. If you'd rather not assemble it yourself, our Bald Care Travel Kit puts our Pre-Shave Oil, Shave Gel, After Shave Lotion and Daily SPF30 Scalp Moisturizer together, and the full range is in Skincare & Aftercare.
