How to Shave Your Head with an Electric Shaver
How to Shave Your Head with an electric shaver
Most first head shaves go wrong in the same three places: hair that is too long for the shaver, a rushed pass over the back of the head, and no aftercare. Here's how to get each one right, from your first shave to a quick routine you'll actually enjoy.

The VEROSHAVE Starter KitThe 7D, two genuine blades and Auto-Refill · $99.99 · then $19.95 a blade every 6 weeks
The short version, in six moves
- If your hair is longer than stubble, clip it as short as your clippers go first.
- Shave after a warm shower, or wet your scalp with warm water to soften the hair.
- Choose wet (shave gel, waterproof shaver only) or dry (clean, dry scalp, a few drops of pre-shave oil).
- Work in order: top and front, sides, crown and back, then the nape and behind the ears.
- Use light pressure. Small circles with a rotary shaver, short straight passes with a foil.
- Check by hand, rinse, pat dry and moisturize. On sunny days, SPF 30 or higher on your scalp.
What you need
You don't need much, but each item has a job. The shaver does the cutting; everything else makes the shave more comfortable or helps you see what you're doing.
- An electric head shaver
- A rotary shaver with several round heads follows the curve of your skull. A foil shaver cuts in straight lines. The VEROSHAVE 7D has seven rotary heads that flex with the shape of your head.
- Hair clippers
- Only for your first shave, or after you've let it grow. Head shavers are built for stubble, not length.
- Pre-shave oil or shave gel
- Oil helps the heads glide on a dry shave. Gel is for wet shaving with a waterproof shaver.
- A hand mirror
- Hold it in front of the bathroom mirror to check the back of your head.
- A towel
- Pat your scalp dry after shaving. Rubbing irritates freshly shaved skin.
- Moisturizer with SPF 30+
- A shaved scalp is exposed skin. Moisturize after every shave and protect it from the sun.

How to shave your head, step by step
Eight steps, from trimming down to the finish. Work through the scalp in this order so you never lose track of where you've been.
-

Trim to stubble
If your hair is longer than a few days' growth, clip it as short as your clippers go before you pick up the shaver. A head shaver cuts short hair cleanly but snags on length, and clogged heads slow down everything after.
-

Soften the hair
Shave at the end of a warm shower, or wet your scalp with warm water first. The American Academy of Dermatology's shaving advice starts with the same step: wet your skin and hair to soften them.
-

Prep for wet or dry
For a wet shave, apply a thin layer of shave gel, and only if your shaver is made for use with water. For a dry shave, towel off completely; a few drops of pre-shave oil help the heads glide.
-

Start at the top and front
Hold the heads flat against your scalp and use light pressure: small, slow circles with a rotary shaver, short straight passes with a foil. Pressing harder doesn't help, and dermatologists advise against putting much pressure on your skin.
-

Sides and around the ears
Fold each ear down with your free hand and work around it in short passes. A trimmer attachment is useful for the edge where the ear meets the head.
-

Take the crown and back slowly
Tilt your head slightly forward so you can reach the back comfortably, without pulling the skin tight. Hair at the crown often grows in a swirl, so approach it from a few directions with short, overlapping passes.
-

Finish the nape by feel
Run your palm slowly over your head from the neck up; any rough patch is what's left. Then check the back with a hand mirror held facing the bathroom mirror.
-

Rinse, dry and moisturize
Rinse off any gel, pat dry and moisturize while the skin is still slightly damp, as the AAD's skin care tips for men suggest. Rinse or brush the shaver heads and let them dry.

Your first shave is different
The first time: take it slow
Clip everything down first, with no guard or the shortest one you have. Give yourself plenty of time: most of it goes on learning the back of your head. Don't chase a perfect finish on day one. A light second pass the next day is kinder to your skin than going over the same spot again and again.
Every shave after: minutes
With a day or two of growth, skip the clippers and go straight to prep. Once you know your head, a regular shave is quick: with a fresh blade, a full head on the VEROSHAVE 7D takes about two minutes. A dull blade is the main reason a routine shave starts taking longer.

Starting from scratch? The Starter Kit is the 7D, two genuine blades and Auto-Refill for $99.99. After that, a fresh blade arrives every 6 weeks for $19.95.
Shop the Starter KitWet or dry: which should you choose?
Both work. Wet shaving with gel adds glide and suits a shave in or just after the shower. Dry shaving is faster and easier for quick daily touch-ups. Whichever you choose, only use water or gel with a shaver that is made for it.

The back of your head and around your ears
This is where almost everyone misses patches, and where irritation tends to show up. Three things make it harder: you can't see it, the skull curves sharply into the neck, and the hair changes direction.
- Shave by feel, then confirm with a mirror. Your palm finds stubble faster than your eyes do.
- Mind the direction of growth. Hair at the crown often swirls, and at the nape it usually grows downward. If the back of your neck gets bumpy after shaving, shave it in the direction the hair grows, as the AAD's razor bump advice recommends.
- Don't dig into the neck crease. Short, light passes across the curve work better than pushing into the fold.
- Use the trimmer for edges. Behind the ears and along a beard line, a trimmer gives a cleaner line than the main heads.
- Ask for a second opinion. For the first few shaves, someone else can spot a missed patch in seconds.
Fixing common problems
If something feels wrong, the cause is usually one of a handful of things.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The shaver pulls or snags | Hair too long, or a dull or dirty blade | Clip long hair first. Clean the heads. Replace the blade when it's due; a VEROSHAVE 7D blade lasts about 5 to 6 weeks. |
| Patches left behind | Moving too fast, or holding the heads at an angle | Slow down, keep the heads flat and overlap your passes. Come at the crown from several directions. |
| Redness or stinging straight after | Too much pressure, or too many passes over one spot | Lighter pressure, fewer passes, then moisturize. |
| Bumps a day or two later | Shaved hairs curling back into the skin (razor bumps) | Shave with the direction of growth, use light pressure and keep the blade fresh. Blade Auto-Refill keeps a fresh blade coming. |
| Dry, tight or flaky scalp | Skin drying out after washing and shaving | Moisturize after every shave, for example with the Daily SPF30 Scalp Moisturizer. |
If bumps keep coming back, look infected, or leave dark marks or raised scars, see a dermatologist. This guide is general grooming information, not medical advice.
How often should you shave your head?
There's no fixed rule. For a smooth look, many people shave every day or every other day; others prefer two or three days of growth for a little texture. Short, regular shaves are usually quicker than clearing several days of stubble. If your skin reacts, change your technique first: lighter pressure, fewer passes and a fresh blade.
